The idea was to take a challenging, tough family experience dealing with diabetes as it involved our youngest son Peter and to create a creative, personal, awareness 60 second TV public service announcement. This TV commerical would be produced by RYERSON-"RYE" university students here in Toronto Canada and RENSSELAER-"RPI" students in Troy N.Y. in the USA. to "tell the truth" about diabetes. And this truth would be told by four talented individuals that have diabetes and that these four diabetics would tell their story...their way. By doing so, they would demonstrate the very human dimension of a tough disease and their individual hope for the important and immediate hop...to...cure diabetes now !
The four diabetics that agreed to help out were:
21 year old Deanna Herrera (Miss New York State 1999);
22 year old Pete Gardiner in his Junior year at RPI on a hockey scholarship.
23 year old Ayden Byle, York University graduate and cross-Canada runner for diabetes
9 year old Jonathon Evans recently diagnosed with diabetes
On February 29th 1999, in Troy N.Y. at a Hockey game between Dartmouth and Rensselaer, our RYERSON/RENSSELAER TV crew filmed the hockey action and individual interviews after the game. Later on the following year 2000, all editing was done. The Estate of Hagood Hardy gave us permission to use the song HOMECOMING as our music signature and Cornerstone 52 Foundation funded the basic expenses. All donations went directly to diabetes research at Hospital fo Sick Children and John P. Robarts Research Institute.
These public service TV announcements were then scheduled across Canada and parts of the USA creating great interest and much additional awareness to diabetes. Today the message is and continues to be... cure diabetes now !
We are now indebted to THE RED PAGES for donating space in this our web site to preserve this special team effort so you can view this our comercial.
But this special project was truly a team effort not to generate sales but to promote awareness for a worthy cause working with two great universities and their students.
"Cure diabetes now!" was and continues to be a project deserving of web page recognition and is part of our corporate soul.
